What is Gaming Addiction Counselling?

Since Pong, the first video game, was first released in 1972, video games have slowly grown to be a part of mainstream North American culture. Once thought as child’s play or something to pass time with at an arcade, today video games are an integral part of what it means to be a Canadian. They provide exciting, engaging entertainment. They are a way to connect with others, even when they are miles away. Similarly, since the iPhone first emerged in 2007 the smartphone has revolutionized all areas of our lives. In many ways we could never do without them – and that’s a good thing! There are many positive aspects of both gaming and screens. Sometimes though there is a need for gaming addiction counselling.

There are times when our use of gaming or screens becomes addictive. This is when we recognize that they are having a detrimental effect on our life, but we can’t stop using them. This could be when the time and money we are spending on them take away from our ability to save or pay for basic necessities. It also happens when we use games or screens to the detriments of our physical human relationships.

If you identify with the description above, then counselling might be a good fit for you. Through counselling the counsellor and counselling participant can talk openly about gaming or screen time and the impact that it is having in the participant’s life. Then, they can discuss what these provide for them and what their “ideal future” looks like. Following this, the two can come up with a collaborative, practical plan to help the participant get the most out of their lives.
