Why I Think Counselling Is Important

As someone finishing their Master’s Degree in Counselling, I could sit here and write about the documented benefits of therapy, why it is important and worth pursuing. While this is all valid, and immensely beneficial, I will instead share with you my personal experience.

For years I saw therapy as something for people with serious problems. I believed that anyone who needed it was “messed up” and that I would never need professional help. It wasn’t until I began experiencing mental health issues of my own that I finally decided to give it a try.

What I experienced was something profoundly different than I had imagined and it impacted me deeply. I discovered a place where I could share my thoughts, feelings, and struggles. I was able to work through these with someone who genuinely cared about me. I found a place where I felt truly heard and was allowed to feel hurt I had been running from. Therapy has helped me to face the things that had been weighing me down and gave me insight into who I am and how I relate to the world.

Whether struggling with mental health, difficulties in relationships, loss, or simply wanting to improve your life, I believe that therapy can help immensely. Counselling serves as a mirror, reflecting back your experience from a unique perspective. It allows for the dismantling of the destructive ways you see yourself and helps you reshape that image. It helps equip you with tools to better face your struggles and empowers you to overcome that which needs to be faced.

My guess is that you are considering whether or not this path is one you want to take. My encouragement to you would be this: Though we all have struggles in this life, we don’t have to face them alone.
