Nicola Sheldon
MA, MC (in progress), Counselling Intern
Reaching out for help can be hard but I truly believe that everyone needs help with their mental health as first step in the journey towards healing. I have 10 years of experience supporting people with their mental health when they are in crisis, and am drawn to working as a counsellor as I love hearing people’s stories and helping to bring about change. I take a client centred, strengths-based approach and draw from several modalities including acceptance and commitment therapy, existential therapy and solution focused therapy. I have additional training in Gottman couples therapy (levels one and two) and Gottman therapy for affairs and trauma. My priority is to provide a safe, empathic, inclusive and non-judgemental space. I have completed my San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety training and welcome Indigenous clients.
As a therapist, I see you as the expert in your own life with all the history, experience and perspectives that entails. I immigrated to Canada from Scotland after completing my Master of Arts degree, in psychology, at the University of Glasgow. I am currently undertaking my Master of Counselling degree at City University of Seattle. As an immigrant I understand the challenges of adjusting to a new country. I am a married mum of three and enjoy working with parents and the challenges that parenthood brings. I also work with couples at all stages of the relationship – relationships are not easy and couples counselling can help bring clarity and increase connection.
When I am not working I enjoy spending time in the outdoors, (I believe that nature provides a lot of mental health benefits) and spending time with my family.
Areas of Specialty: anxiety • depression • burnout • life transitions • parenting • families • relationships • grief
